Random Name Generator

Use this free random name generator to pick a random girl name, find a random male name, or create a fake name for a character or example. From a blank page to a name

Every story needs a name.

A character. An example. Your next idea.

Start with a name. Write what happens next.

A random name generator helps when the right name is the only thing missing. You might be writing a scene, building a sample profile, or looking for a fresh first name to consider. Instead of working through a long alphabetical list, let the tool pick a starting point and decide whether it fits.

This free picker puts the results first. Choose girl, boy, or gender-neutral names, or keep All names for a mixture. Generate first names alone or pair them with surnames, then copy one result or a whole batch. There is no account to create, prompt to write, or form asking for your personal details.

Your next name, in three steps.

  1. 01

    Set your direction.

Choose a name type and a format. Full name combines a given name with a surname; First name keeps things short. Changing a setting refreshes the selection immediately.

  2. 02

    Make a little shortlist.

Select any number from 1 to 10. One result makes a quick prompt; several make comparison easier. Press Generate names again to explore another batch with the same settings.

  3. 03

    Keep the ones you like.

Tap a name to copy it, or use the corner copy icon for a list with one name per line. Paste your favorites into your notes before generating again.

A little inspiration

Pick a random girl name.

Choose Girl names to narrow the results to that list. A random name generator for girl names can help you move past the same familiar choices: compare a short name such as Ada with something longer such as Josephine, then think about the sound that suits your project.

For baby name ideas, select First name so you can try the result with your own surname. Read it aloud and note any initials or nicknames you like. This is a way to discover possibilities; meanings, pronunciation, popularity, and family connections need a separate check before making a personal decision.

Find a different starting point

Find a random male name.

Select Boy names for a random male name, with the same choice of first or full names. Try generating five results and reading them together. Names with different lengths and sounds can help you distinguish characters, especially when several people appear in the same scene.

Gender-neutral names has its own list, including choices such as Avery, Quinn, and Taylor. All names mixes the included first-name lists into one pool. These labels make browsing easier; they do not define who can use a name. Naming traditions and associations vary across families, languages, and cultures.

Characters and stories

Use a generated name to start a character sketch. Write three sentences about what the person wants, what is in the way, and what happens next. For a longer story, check that your main characters have distinct initials and that each name suits the setting.

Mockups and examples

Use a fake name generator to fill a sample profile, presentation, or interface draft. A full name gives a layout more realistic text than a repeated placeholder. Keep example records clearly labeled as fictional, and avoid pairing generated names with real personal information.

Writing games

Generate one name per player and invent a short introduction for each imaginary person. Or pick two names and write the conversation they have at a bus stop. The generator supplies the names; you and your group decide the rules and the story.

Behind the pick

How the name picker works.

The tool selects from a curated collection of 311 distinct first names and 144 surnames. The collection is primarily English-language and is intended for inspiration. It is not a complete directory of names from every country, and it does not include filters for nationality, meaning, or historical period.

Your browser's random number generator chooses first names from the active pool. Each included first name has an equal chance of being selected first. Within a batch, a first name is used once. Full names add independently selected surnames, so two results can share a last name. Later generations start fresh and may bring back earlier picks.

Found a keeper?

Copy it before your next click. Selection happens in your browser, and the tool does not save a result history. If clipboard access is blocked, you can select the displayed text and copy it manually instead. The corner copy icon separates names with line breaks, ready for a note or document.

A quick note about fake names.

A generated combination can match a real person by coincidence. It is an idea for fiction or examples, not a verified identity or a guarantee of anonymity. Review your choice for the context where you will use it. For another kind of creative prompt, try our random animal generator or random emoji generator.

Choose All names, Girl names, Boy names, or Gender-neutral names, select first names or full names, and press Generate name. A result appears when the page loads, and changing any setting generates a fresh selection automatically.

Select Girl names under Name type. Choose First name for a given name alone, or Full name to add a randomly selected surname. Generate one result or compare up to 10 girl names at a time.

Yes. Select Boy names to pick a random male name from the included list. You can generate just a first name or a first name paired with a surname, then copy the results you want to keep.

Yes. Choose Gender-neutral names for a dedicated selection that includes names such as Avery, Quinn, and Taylor. These categories are browsing aids; naming conventions and gender associations vary between people and cultures.

Yes. Choose Full name to combine a first name with a randomly selected surname. The fake name generator supplies name ideas for fictional characters and examples. It does not create verified identities, addresses, or personal records, and a result may match a real person.

You can choose any quantity from 1 to 10 names per generation. Change Number of names to update the results, or press Generate names to get another batch using the same settings.

Yes. Change Name format to First name. The tool then displays given names alone. Switch back to Full name whenever you want a randomly selected surname added to each result.

Tap an individual name to copy it, or use the corner copy icon to copy the current results with one name per line. If your browser blocks copying, select the displayed text and copy it manually. Copy favorites before generating again because the tool does not save a history.

Each batch uses a first name only once, so the displayed names do not repeat within that generation. Surnames can repeat because they are selected separately. A later generation starts from the full pool, so an earlier name can appear again.

No. The tool uses a curated, primarily English-language list of first names and surnames. It does not offer country, language, ethnicity, or name-meaning filters. Some included names are also used in other languages and regions.

Yes. You can generate and copy names for free without an account. The name selection runs in your browser and does not require you to submit any personal information.

You can use the first-name results as a starting point for a baby name shortlist. Try Girl names, Boy names, or Gender-neutral names, then check pronunciation, meaning, family preferences, and how the name sounds with your own surname separately.
